Service

American entrepreneur, economist and business theorist Roger Babson once remarked, “If things are not going well with you, begin your effort at correcting the situation by carefully examining the service you are rendering, and especially the spirit in which you are rendering it.”  Whether it is in business or life, how you serve will most often determine the return you receive.

Often the most powerful things come in small packages.  Look at what is accomplished by using 10 number digits or an alphabet of 26 letters.  Look at what fiber optics did for communication or the computer chip did for various devices enjoyed today.  All very small in statue but yeah has transformed the life and the economy in a large way.

Life and business accomplishment boils down to a 7 letter word:  SERVICE.  Though its presence seems simple and somewhat easy to understand, it does demand a closer evaluation.  SERVICE can be examined as follows:

S…SINCERITY:  Do you really care about the well-being as well as meeting the needs of others?  How are you expressing and exhibiting SINCERITY to others?

E…EDUCATION:  How are you staying up-to-date with your career growth demands? What about the demands of day-to-day living and interaction with others?  How are you developing your mind and general knowledge level?

R…RELATIONSHIPS:  Do you have a true relationship with people or clients or is it simply an “association?” What do you know about those you serve or come in contact?

V…VISION: How do you see the future? What plans are you converting from thought to physical reality that insures your commitment to greater service and reliability? Are you certain about you and what you must become?

I…INSPIRE:  Through what you say, do or how you think, how are you influencing others to take more appropriate action to enhance their quality of life? How are you physically getting others to become more than they think they can be?

C…CHEERFUL: How do you show others that you enjoy who you are and /or what you do? Are you able to laugh at yourself and create an atmosphere that it is ok to have fun? Are others “at ease” in your presence so that they can simply “be themselves?”

E…ETHICAL:  is what you do when people are looking the same as when they are not looking? Are you fair? Do you build good will? Are you always truthful in your statements as well as your interactions?  In essence how are you “walking your talk” when it really matters?

More than you expect, it is the little things that do make a tremendous difference.  It’s not necessarily the awards you win or even the money you make; but, more importantly, it is really how you are SERVING others that matters most.  If you serve well, the awards, the money and related accolades will come.  Therefore, make SERVICE a centerpiece in your life and career and find out for yourself the return you receive.
